snowcross. you can barely see the sign that says canceled. >> oh, that's got to be a bummer. right now, the breaking new details on the attempted hijacking overnight. terry moran is in london with the latest. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, robin. panic in the overnight in the skies. the ethiopian copilot of ethiopian airlines flight 702 is being questioned. he is the man who seized control of the plane in a bid for asylum. >> an aircraft from ethiopian airlines wanted to land in general nev geneva, first for fuel. >> reporter: it started around 12:30 a.m. local monday time. the plane's transponder started

squawking 7500. the worldwide distress code for a flight that is being hijacked. the alleged hijacker, it turns out, the plane's copilot. an ethiopian man in the early 30s. he took control of the plane when the pilot was this the bathroom and locked himself in the cockpit. telling air traffic control he wanted asylasylum. you can' the plane. it circled back and forth. the copilot unawe proved for landing. he tells the controllers that the plane is running out of fuel with over 200 people on board. >> fuel remaining now is 20 minutes. >> reporter: around 6:00 a.m. geneva time, the plane lands safely. passengers seen exiting the plane. the copilot opening through this open cockpit window, possibly down the rope seen in the picture. that's when police arrested him.

they said he demanded asylum because he felt threatened in his home country. he could face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty of the hijacking. officials and air defense systems throughout europe on high alert. the passengers were unaware they were being hijacked at all. questions abound. if what the copilot wanted was asylum, why hijack the plane when he could have gotten off in plane in roam and asked for it in italy? >> good question. terry, thank you. let's get more on this from brian ross. you hear something like this, terry just said, alerts go off all around the world. we all remember that e jgyptian pilot that brought down the plane. >> the goal now is to keep people out of the cockpit. in 1999, a copilot of an egypt airplane after taking off from

this morning, weather conditions left many of the competitions postponed, due to heavy fog, including the men's snowboard cross competition. alex deibold saying they're literally running the fans on the snow guns to try and blow away the fog. it's not working. sunday, simply dazzling. american favorites meryl davis and charlie white, flawless on the ice. earning the highest score ever recorded in the short dance. >> here's a look at the twizles. >> the show-stopping twizzle. a one-foot t turn moving across the ice. judges looking for speed, closeness, andnd synchronicity. they could capture america's first ever ice dance gold. the american brother/sister duo also spectacular. and team usa's madison chock and

one competitor taking off the slopes on a stretcher. two others as well. all of this after russian skater marie broke her spine. he's been air-lifted to germany for further treatment. all of the accidents happening on the same hill. the u.s. bobsledders got into the mix. they take the track again this morning in a bid to win the first u.s. bobsledding gold in 6 62 years. new in the mix, the high-tech sleds customized by bmw. the jamaican team. they are currently in last place. they have a worldwide audience cheering them on. they're like rock stars here, guys. etch waiting in line to get their picture with them. i have not gotten the chance.

we're joined from gold medal-winning soccer star julie foudy who is covering the games for abc and espn. we've been seeing the fog. as an athlete, you're all prepared for your event, it gets postponed, what do you do? >> well, the sports psychologists would probably say some type of term like embrace the challenge. we as athletes say, you deal wit and move on. you know things will be crazy. weather challenges. all sorts of distractions. the best olympians know you just go. you go with the flow. >> you deal with it. i like that. davis and white. we could see olympic history. ice dancing for the american team. they were spectacular. what do they need, somewhat the biggest challenge in the free skate competition later today? >> the biggest challenge comes in the form of the canadian duo.
